November 3rd, 2011
Arthur Raise asked:

Technology has automated life in many ways. Customers punch buttons and withdraw money from ATMs. If you put coins in a machine out pops a pop. And on the internet one click can get you the whole world at your doorstep. Renting a car online is what most people prefer. But now with self-service car rentals the bother of customer service pople and long waiting periods is gone.

Many companies like Zipcar and Flexcar have automated systems and so reduced overheads. They now can offer great deals at their self-service rental car outlets. Here is an insight into how self-service car rental works.

1. All a customer needs to do is sign up online and reserve a car through the website or on the automated phone system.

2. The model of the car can be chosen online where all cars available are displayed along with their bookings.

3. The customer will get a zip card that will unlock the car booked by her. All cars are parked unattended at garages and parking lots. The keys to the car and kept inside the car. So all a customer needs to do is wave the zip card unlock the car and drive away.

4. It is the responsibility of the customer to keep the rental car in good condition and return it to the designated spot when the hire is over.

5. All you need to hire a car is a valid credit card.

Many self-service car rental companies have outlet machines at airports, railway stations and bus stations. It is all about bringing convenience to car renters. In case of a problem with the car they provide instructions on what to do. Some self-service car companies even have mobile service people who will do the needful.

I made a reservation and was told that a $300 deposit was needed with a debit card… Does this mean they charge $300 plus the rental fee, or only the $300 and then when the car is returned the return the remainder from the fee subtracted to the $300, or only hold your card until the car is returned and charge the fee’s plus any other charges to the card??

Do All Car Rental Companies Offer One-Way Rentals?

October 7th, 2011
A. Nutt asked:

Car rental companies are all about satisfying their customers, so they offer a wide array of services. Some of the services are needed and others are not. There is also the fact that there are a lot of add-ons that people may or may not need. But what about those things that you may need, but you find out they may not have? What special things do you need out of a car rental company?

Of those things that are needed by some individuals are one-way rentals. One-way rentals allow an individual to rent the car in one city, drive it to another, and then leave it at another location owned by the rental company. In other words, they do not have to drive the car back to its original location. This is great for those individuals who are moving to another destination. This is also great for those wishing to drive to their destination, but then fly, ride the train, or ride a bus back.

A scenario

Here is a perfect scenario as to why someone may need a one-way rental: Let’s say that someone drives 12 hours away from home. They drove instead of flew because they wanted to take the time out to be on the road alone and enjoy the sights. However, they get a phone call that tells them there is an emergency and they need to come home as soon as possible. The only way they are going to be able to achieve that is if they buy a plane ticket in order to get home quickly. However, they have an issue on their hands and that issue is that they have the rental car and they are not sure what to do. They surely can’t drive back home and make it back in a reasonable amount of time.

This is where a one-way rental comes in. They go to another location owned by their rental car company and find out that they can just drop the car there so that they can catch a flight home.

Do they all offer one-way rentals?

As for whether or not all rental car companies offer one-way rentals, the truth is that they don’t. The reason is because not all car rental companies are nationwide companies. There are smaller companies that you may find in your local area that may be a one location type of company or they own very few throughout the country. The national chains, on the other hand, they do offer one-way rentals. You probably won’t find a company with locations all over the country that doesn’t offer one-way rentals to their customers.

There are just so many reasons why someone may need a one-way rental that the company would be hurting financially if they didn’t offer that option. Customers would simply go to another company that did offer the service. That’s how a lot of companies make a lot of money. They offer services such as this.

Don’t fret

So if you need a one-way car rental, don’t fret because this is definitely an option that you can take. It is nothing to be afraid of asking about. They’re not going to look at you strange if you say you want a one way ticket to your destination. They are going to tell you where their location is in the town you are going so that you know where to drop of the car. If you need any other information regarding the drop off, you can simply ask and they will answer your questions. Just don’t forget to shop around before committing to one company.

Car Rental Vehicle Options

September 24th, 2011
John Layton asked:

When going through the process of renting a vehicle, one step involves choosing the class you’ll be driving. A lot of people aren’t entire sure what this means, and let themselves be sold on a higher priced option than what they need. There are three main types of options:

Economy - Economy cars are the smallest of the car rental choices. These are also the most fuel efficient, which has made them an increasingly popular choice in recent years. While economy cars appeal to the gas budget conscious they do not hold as much weight if storage space is a big concern.

Economy cars can generally accommodate four adults and one small bag, one medium bag and one large suitcase. These cars can come in either a 2 or 4-door version and include such models as a Hyundai Accent or Ford Focus.

Compact - Compact rental cars are a bit larger than economy sized rental cars. The usually can fit 5 people and can accommodate 2 small bags, 2 medium bags and 1 large suitcase. The Chevrolet Cobalt is one example of a compact car that you may receive if you book this size vehicle at your rental agency.

Intermediate - The next step up after the compact size car is the intermediate size rental car. This class of vehicle fits 5 individuals and has room for slightly more luggage as the compact rental car.

The Hyundai Sonata or Pontiac G6 may be your rental car if you choose to go with the intermediate size vehicle. Generally, it will be more of a “luxury vehicle” than the compact.

Full Size - The full size vehicle, such as a Ford Taurus or Chevrolet Impala, is the next size up and it is a great family car. It also holds 5 individuals but has enough room in the car for two large suitcases as opposed to the intermediate class of vehicle which only has enough storage room for one suitcase of that size.

If stretching room and leg room are a priority, this is probably the class you want to look at for the most comfortable travel experience.

Keep in mind that each rental car company has their own selection with regard to vehicle makes and models. If you are looking for a specific type of vehicle, make sure you call ahead to see what they have available for your particular needs and time-frame.

A Rookies Guide to Car Rentals

September 15th, 2011
John Pawlett asked:

Renting a car can be a lot of fun, just plain fun. Car rentals offer the renter the opportunity to drive a car, truck or SUV that they normally would not or could not buy. Renting a car is for a weekend get away, to impress someone or just to have something different to drive for a couple of days are some of the most popular reasons to visit a rental company. However, as fun as it is to rent cars, there are some not so fun things that must happen before you drive it off the lot.

1- Keep in mind that most rental companies will not rent to any driver under the age of 25. If you fall under that magic number, you more than likely will need to get an older relative or friend to sign the actual contract for you.

2- You will of course, need a valid drivers license to rent the car. If you do not have a license, they will not rent to you under any circumstances. Most companies will also require you to reserve your car with the use of a major credit card, however, you can pay in cash if you would prefer.

3- You do not need to have personal auto insurance to rent a car; they will ask you if you would like to purchase their insurance for the duration of the rental contract. If, however, you have your own insurance policy, be sure to call your agent to see if you are covered during your use of a rental car. If your personal auto policy covers you, there is no need to purchase a policy from the rental company.

4- It is wise to call several car rental companies to inquire about prices, car availability and specials. Ask about options such as upgrades, pick up and drop off services, unlimited mileage and weekend versus weekly rental prices. Many companies will also offer special deals to customers who are members of other organizations (i.e. credit unions, warehouse clubs, etc).

5- After you have called around, found the best deal and reserved your choice car; it is time to pick it up. Be sure to have all of your personal paperwork with you, including your auto policy if you will not be buying theirs. Before you sign the contract, read through it and ask any questions you may have.

6- Make sure you know all the rules and regulations on the car as for when you bring the car back to the company when you have finished it they cannot demand money of you for a reason you are not aware off. and incase you crash or are in a accident you need to know what to do.
